The On Cloudstratus: Double cushioning that goes the distance

When the On Cloudstratus was first introduced into the running shoe market, it had tongues wagging over its double layer of CloudTec® – the very first On shoe to have this innovative feature of comfort and support. With the second-generation Cloudstratus, Swiss running shoe manufacturer On retains this characteristic of the shoe, also extending the double layer of CloudTec® into the forefoot, and adding On’s signature Helion™ superfoam to the mix, too.

The second-generation Cloudstratus will certainly remind fans of the shoe of its predecessor, but the latest version of this running shoe – which is ideal for longer distances – improves on various aspects of the design and functionality to offer a stable running experience that doesn’t compromise on cushioning.

With a re-engineered bottom unit that includes a wider forefoot, the Cloudstratus now provides additional support that absorbs the impact of the road, while still offering the smooth and responsive ride runners have come to expect from On.

Runners will recognise the familiar explosive push-off that is a hallmark of On’s shoes, with the Cloudstratus’s Speedboard® providing stability and driving runners forward, even after many kilometres.

The wider forefoot fit works in tandem with an improved inner sock construction and sturdier hold on the heel, thanks to additional foam and an upgraded heel cage that keeps the foot firmly in place, and reduces the chances of lateral foot roll.

The Cloudstratus feels secure, albeit cosy on the foot due to anatomically engineered mesh (with a limited number of overlays to reduce uncomfortable and unnecessary pressure points) and the asymmetrical star-lacing system that runners were introduced to when the Cloudstratus was first released. Supporting the natural motion of the foot over long distances is key for On, and the manufacturer has again succeeded in this effort with the second generation of the shoe.

The shoe’s breathable mesh upper has been made with 70% recycled polyester – in line with On’s aim to reduce the carbon footprint of its shoes – and the entire shoe features 20% recycled material, which is twice as much as the first-generation Cloudstratus.

The Cloudstratus has been made with medium to long-distance runners in mind, and just one jog in the comfortable, roomy and cushioned shoe will tell you why. It is responsive, but comfortable, and supportive, but soft. This max cushioned shoe will go the distance, no matter what the distance is.
