SA’s toughest virtual running and cycling race series has kicked offThe Social Media Company
It’s hard to believe we barely knew the concept of virtual races just more than a year ago. These online iterations of the real thing have gained significant traction since lockdowns to curb the spread of COVID-19 were imposed globally last year, and one local virtual race now promises participants one of the toughest challenges to hit our shores.
The Outdoor Enthusiast has launched a multi-stage virtual race series for local runners and riders that are looking to compete and stay race fit. Made up of three stages that have to be completed in three consecutive days, each race takes place on fixed days every month.
Participants can enter the running or cycling races, and can choose between shorter or longer distances. Each race will count towards pushing their rankings higher and compete for a cash prize at the end of the series.
Tier 1 entries (available to the first 500 entrants) open first, and include free delivery of an all-inclusive race box, which participants receive before race weekend every month. This nice little perk comes with loads of goodies, including a collectors’ medal, a pair of high-quality flip-flops and snacks and beverages, among others. Tier 2 entrants also receive a smaller goodie bag before the race.
Participants submit their results via The Outdoor Enthusiast website, also providing data from their fitness wearables as proof of their participation and times, and according to the rules set out for the multi-stage race.
The first race in the series took place from 5 March to 7 March (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) and saw athletes from across the country take part in what looks to be one of the most exciting online racing opportunities of 2021. The next races will be held from 9 April to 11 April – follow The Outdoor Enthusiast Facebook page to stay on top of the latest news about the events.
