Here are the top 10 fitness trends for 2020

For the 14th time, the American College of Sports Medicine’s Health and Fitness Journal has released the results of a worldwide fitness trends survey, conducted among more than 3,000 health and fitness professionals.

The results of this survey aim to predict which trends will reign supreme in the world of healthy living in the coming year. As you might have expected, fitness experts certainly see tech in their crystal balls – but that’s not all the new decade holds for health and fitness.

Here are ACSM’s top 10 trends for 2020.

10. Employing certified fitness professionals

We hire professionals in all the other aspects of our lives, why shouldn’t this also be the case for our general wellbeing? “Employing fitness professionals” made its debut at the number 6 trend for 2019, and is still an important trend to note in the new year.

9. Health/wellness coaching

Health and wellness coaching has popped up as a trend since 2010, and is showing no signs of going anywhere just yet. This integrated approach to overall wellbeing combines behavioural science with health and fitness, using a one-on-one or small group approach to training, with a coach that considers the client’s vision, values, and goals to structure a behaviour change intervention strategy.

8. Fitness programmes for older adults

Listed as the number 4 trend in 2019, fitness programmes for older adults should still be popular in 2020. People are living longer, healthier and more active lives in the modern era, and as members of the Baby Boomer generation age, their health still looks to stay a top priority in the new decade.

7. Body weight training

Because of its relative affordability due to the minimal amount of equipment required, body weight training will remain a popular trend in 2020, according to the ACSM survey. This type of training, which uses a person’s own body weight as the training modality, drops two places from being the fifth-most popular trend forecast for 2019.

6. Exercise is Medicine®

At its core, EIM is a philosophy and approach to health that focuses on medical professionals incorporating physical activity as a method to treat illness. With EIM, healthcare providers include a physical activity assessment in their initial examinations of patients, and prescribe physical activity as a part of their treatment regime.

5. Personal training

If you’ve ever had one, you’ll realise how beneficial having a personal trainer can be, and this is one trend that has been around since the ACSM’s very first survey in 2006.

4. Training with free weights

Included in the ACSM survey’s results for the first time this year, training with free weights like dumbbells, barbells, kettle bells and medicine balls seems to look like a popular form of exercise in 2020.

3. Group training

Group fitness programmes and classes can be beneficial for participants in a number of ways, not least motivating people and pushing their boundaries in a setting where they aren’t alone. Group training (any type of programme that includes more than 5 participants) drops one spot from last year’s number 2 position.

2. High-intensity interval training (HIIT)

HIIT is still getting as much attention as it did when it topped the ACSM’s survey results in 2014. Characterised by short bouts of high-intensity exercise, followed by a short period of rest, HIIT will still be a popular trend in the first year of the next decade.

1. Wearable technology

Unsurprisingly, and not for the first time, wearable tech looks to be the top fitness trend in 2020. Fitness and activity trackers have truly entered the mainstream, and are now allowing users to keep track of their health in ever-more innovative ways.
